A Life of Worship at First Presbyterian Church

We invite all to join us as we worship the Lord in spirit and in truth, ever mindful that we come before a holy God who is worthy of all praise, honor and glory.

Purpose and Beliefs Our
worship services are structured to emphasize reverence and thanksgiving, as well as expressing joy as we come into His presence.

Our beautiful sanctuary with its magnificent stained glass windows, built in 1892, provides a welcoming and prayerful setting for our worship services.
History

Throughout the year, our worship services incorporate thoughtful, Christ-centered
sermons, prayer, praise, and a blend of traditional and contemporary vocal and instrumental music. We hold Worship Service at 10:30 AM (September to June). During the summer, we hold Worship Service at 9:30 AM. For Sunday School information and times, please see Christian Education.

Each Sunday, young children (approximate ages 3-6) hear a special message and then go to their own Children's Worship service. We also offer nursery care.

The first Sunday of every month is Communion Sunday. All who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are invited to participate.

In February, we honor our military with our Four Chaplains Sunday service.

During Lent, we offer a Maundy Thursday Communion service and two Easter Sunday services, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., with coffee hour between the two.

In the late Spring, the choir and instrumental ensemble present an "all-music" worship service.

Families from the congregation decorate the sanctuary for the Advent and Christmas season, and the children take part in special services, These decorations include a large Christmas tree decorated with Chrismon symbols, beautiful wreaths, garlands and candles, and especially the many poinsettias purchased by members in memory of loved ones.

Two candlelight services are held on Christmas Eve: an early service for families with young children at 5:00 p.m. and a traditional service at 7:00 p.m.

Print copies and sound recordings of all services are available. thanks to dedicated sound-system volunteers.

For the Lent and Advent seasons, we provide booklets with daily devotionals written by the congregation and staff. Copies are also sent to the crews of the submarine, USS Rhode Island.

Our sanctuary is the site of many celebrations of life, from baptisms to funerals.
